The cost of a whole house generator in Dallas comes down to five things: how much of the house you want to power, the type of transfer switch, whether your panel needs work, how far the generator sits from the panel and its fuel source, and the permit and inspection. Two homes on the same street can get very different quotes for those reasons, which is why an honest price starts with a site visit rather than a number on a website.
A to Z Electric handles whole home generator installation across Dallas and DFW, and we quote every job before any work begins. Here is what goes into that quote, so you can compare options and ask the right questions.
1. How Much of the House You Want to Power
This is the biggest factor. A generator that runs the refrigerator, the furnace fan, some lights, the internet and a few outlets is a very different machine from one that runs every air conditioner, the electric range and the pool pump at once. The more load you want covered, the larger the generator and the heavier the transfer equipment.
Start with a list. Write down what you could not live without during a multi-day outage, then what would be nice to have. An electrician turns that list into a load calculation and a generator size.
2. Standby or Portable
A standby generator is installed permanently outside and starts on its own. A portable generator is rolled out and started by hand. A portable hookup with an inlet and an interlock is the lower-cost way to get safe backup power; a standby system costs more but works when nobody is home.
- Portable hookup: an outdoor inlet box, a cord to the generator, and an interlock or manual transfer switch at the panel. You choose which circuits to run.
- Standby system: the generator itself, a concrete or composite pad, an automatic transfer switch, the wiring between them, and a fuel connection.
3. The Transfer Switch
Every generator connection needs a way to keep the generator from feeding power back onto the utility lines. For a standby unit that is an automatic transfer switch. A switch sized for the whole service costs more than one that covers only selected circuits, and some homes use load management so a smaller generator can still run large appliances one at a time.
4. Your Panel and Service
If the panel has no open spaces, is near capacity, or is an older model that should be replaced anyway, that work is part of the project. Homes with a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel should plan on replacing it before connecting a generator. See our panel upgrade page for what that involves.
5. Distance and Fuel
The farther the generator sits from the panel, the more wire and conduit the job needs. Standby units also need fuel: a natural gas line from the meter, or a propane tank where gas is not available. The gas side is separate trade work, so ask who is handling it and make sure it is in the quote you are comparing.
6. Permit, Inspection and Placement Rules
Generator and transfer switch work needs an electrical permit and an inspection. Cities and HOAs may also have rules on where a standby unit can sit and how far it must be from windows, doors and property lines. Those rules can change the location, and the location changes the cost.
7. Upkeep After Installation
A standby generator runs a short self-test on a schedule and needs routine service like any engine. Budget for that as part of owning one.
How to Get an Accurate Quote
- Bring your list of must-run appliances and circuits.
- Know your panel size and brand. A photo of the panel label helps.
- Decide whether you want automatic switching or are comfortable starting a portable unit.
- Ask that the permit, inspection, pad and any panel work be included, so quotes compare the same scope.
Larger projects like a standby generator can often be spread out through our financing partner. Pairing the install with whole house surge protection is also worth considering, since outages and storms often bring surges with them.
